At The Mill, we hope to play a part in shaping Wilmington’s and Delaware’s future, but our name is rooted in Delaware’s rich history.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Delaware became a manufacturing hub with the opening of the Brandywine River Mills. Founded by French immigrant Eleuthère Irénéé du Pont and built along the Brandywine River near Wilmington, it became the largest producer of explosive gunpowder in the country. The story of the Brandywine River Mills is a story of an entrepreneurial venture and a willingness to learn and adapt. It’s a story that has been repeated again and again in Delaware and is the story that will shape Delaware’s future.

When our founder, Robert, returned to Delaware after working on various projects across the world, it was around the time newspaper headlines talked about the DuPont company leaving Delaware and about manufacturing’s decline in the state. The story of the historic Mills, the individuals that worked there, the struggles they overcame, the improvements they made over time, resonated with him and The Mill’s name was born.
